Circle 10 Required Training Minimize

Date: January 15, 2010
To: Circle Ten Council Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches,
Venturing Crew Advisors, and Sea Scout Skippers
From: Don Wendell, Circle Ten Council Training Chair
Subject: Required Training

As you may have heard, the BSA will soon implement training requirements for adult leaders. This will be phased in over a two-year period. In year one, the top leaders of each unit (Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, Venturing Crew Advisors, and Sea Scout Skippers) will be required to be trained. In year two, the requirements will extend to all other direct contact leaders (Assistant Cubmasters; Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Den Leaders and Assistants; Assistant Scoutmasters; Assistant Varsity Team Leaders; Associate Venturing Crew Advisors; and Sea Scout Mates).

Nationally, the training requirement will begin in 2011; however, Circle Ten Council has been selected to serve as a pilot site, so the requirements for us begin a year earlier – 2010 for the top leaders and 2011 for all other leaders.

The training requirements for top leaders are as follows:

Cubmaster – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, and Leader Specific
Training.

Scoutmaster – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, Leader Specific
Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

Varsity Team Coach – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, Leader Specific
Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. (Introduction to Outdoor Leader
Skills is only required if the team is engaged in a hiking or camping program.)

Venturing Crew Advisor – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, Leader
Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. (Introduction to Outdoor
Leader Skills is only required if the crew is engaged in outdoor programs.)

Sea Scout Skipper – Youth Protection*, This is Scouting*, Leader Specific Training, and
Sea Scout Leader Specialized Training.

*Available on-line at MyScouting.org

To prepare for the pilot, the Circle Ten Council Training Committee is conducting a training inventory of leaders and updating training records. Many of you already have the required training. For those of you who do not, numerous opportunities will be available for you to meet the requirements before the end of 2010.

Every youth deserves a trained leader, and the required training initiative is a positive step that will improve the overall quality of Scouting in our council. For questions or additional information, please contact your District Training Chair.

National Traiing Updates 2010 Minimize

June-July 2010 Training Updates

Training updates will be spread across 2 months (June/July and August/September, 2010) due to staff requirements with Jamboree. If you have any questions or comments regarding the training updates, feel free to send a note to nationaltraining@scouting.org . Happy Jamboree!!!

Required Training

The Volunteer Development Committee recommends that the twenty councils selected to pilot required training continue their efforts of into the second year, which would require that the next level of all direct contact leaders be trained.  It has been determined that one year of testing has not provided sufficient data to measure the effectiveness of required training. One of the major obstacles had been the repairing and collection of accurate training records. By the end of 2011 there should be a Learning Management System (LMS) in place that will provide actionable data and a validated plan that could be rolled out for the remainder of the councils to follow. If approved, all councils would begin requiring training for their top leaders beginning in 2012 and phase into all direct contact leaders in 2013.

Philmont Training Center

The Philmont Training Center is offering a special 100th anniversary patch to conference participants, faculty and family members. Only people attending the training center will be eligible to receive this special patch.  NAYLE is in full swing with our new co-ed program open to Venturing. There is still room in remaining sessions this summer but spaces are filling up fast. Scholarships for NAYLE are still available for 2010. To apply, contact your regional program director. The Philmont Leadership Challenge is almost full so sign up soon if you are planning to attend this course.

Fast Start – New!!!

Training codes for the new fast starts can be found in the Quick Links section of the scouting.org/volunteers/training webpage by clicking on “Training Codes updated 6/1/2010.”

2011 Deadline Fast Approaching

June 30, 2010 is the deadline for a council to make an application to conduct a Wood Badge, Powder Horn or NYLT course in 2011. Applications can be downloaded from the main training page.

Cub Scouts New Delivery Method

The roll-out of the Cub Scouts New Delivery Method has been very well received by thousands of professional Scouters and volunteers across the United States. All materials used in the roll-out are available for use to train councils, districts and units. This is the beginning of a new era for training roll-outs for the BSA. You can expect this level of support in implementing all new program updates and changes in the future.

The supportive materials include:

  • PowerPoint and script to use when training units
  • PowerPoint template for use in creating new training
  • Executive talking points for Scout and District Executives to use to easily explain what the new method is all about
  • You-Tube video (3 minutes) describing the new “Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide,” the most integral piece of the literature developed to support the new method
  • A live-version of the “Cub Scouts New Delivery Method Webinar,” is being taped on June 12th and will be available online by June 20th.
  • Fall webinars will be done to support new den leaders by rank
  • More You-Tube “quick-start” videos are being taped on June 14th and should be available online by July 15th

All of this material and more can be located at: http://scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/Leaders/NewDeliveryMethod.aspx

NEW MyScouting Feature coming soon!

In the coming weeks a new Training Validation feature will be added to the Training section of My Scouting. This feature will enable MyScouting users with a member ID to look-up individual training record history. This feature will include an option for Youth Protection training taken in the past two years as well as an All Training search.

Leadership Development Task Force (LDTF) Update

A new NYLT Certificate is underway for those holding co-ed/Venturing courses in 2010. This will be available for all courses in 2011. Remember that NAYLE is already open to Venturing this summer (see PTC info)

Reminder…

The deadline for 2011 Leadership Courses (Power Horn, Woodbadge NYLT) application submissions is June 30, 2010. Please be sure to get your application in to your Area Training Chair prior to this date. Applications can be downloaded from the main training page. Further updates to NYLT, Kodiak and Wood Badge will be forthcoming in July.

Any questions concerning youth or adult leadership development courses can be sent to program.content@scouting.org .

 May 2010 Training Updates

  • Do you want to know more about the new delivery methods of Cub Scouts? Webinars will be offered through Friday, May 14, 2010, to answer your questions. To see the daily webinar schedule and enroll in a webinar, go to http://programimpact.kintera.org/cubscoutsnewmethod . You will hear the very latest on the changes and will have an opportunity to ask questions.
  • If you can’t make it to Philmont for training this summer, you may want to consider attending the Volunteer Development Training Conference at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base on January 17-22, 2011. The conference has been expanded to include Scoutmasters and unit commissioners, and will cover advancement policy and procedures, district Key 3, geocaching, and the administration of Venturing. Additional information and the application form can be found in the main body of this training page.
  • More than 100 courses will be offered this summer and fall at the Philmont Training Center, and there is still space available in most of them. A promotional video and application form can be found on this training page.
  • The Philmont Training Center offers a masters track square knot course for which you may have already completed all or part of the requirements. The application can be found as a download on this training page.
  • Councils may apply to host a Wood Badge, Powder Horn, or NYLT course by using a new form that can found in the main body of this training page.
  • The most frequently asked question we hear is “What makes a trained leader?” We have updated information to answer that question and have included a list of other supplemental and advanced training opportunities. The new document can be found in the main body of information on this training page.
  • Training teams may be interested in forming SWAT teams to go after untrained leaders. SWAT stands for “Scouts Want Adults Trained,” and the National Supply Group has made SWAT caps available. They are item No. 610494 and sell for $12.99.
  • We are hearing that more and more councils are voluntarily requiring training for their top leaders. The plans for a national effort are still undetermined, as the outcome of the 20 pilot councils will greatly affect the direction we take in 2011 and beyond. Training teams should continue to update their training records and offer quality training courses.
