Changes to Youth Protection Training

Effective June 1, 2010

  • Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers, regardless of their position.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before submitting an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

Circle 10 Required Training

Minimize

Date: January 15, 2010
To: Circle Ten Council Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches,
Venturing Crew Advisors, and Sea Scout Skippers
From: Don Wendell, Circle Ten Council Training Chair
Subject: Required Training

As you may have heard, the BSA will soon implement training requirements for adult leaders. This will be phased in over a two-year period. In year one, the top leaders of each unit (Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, Venturing Crew Advisors, and Sea Scout Skippers) will be required to be trained. In year two, the requirements will extend to all other direct contact leaders (Assistant Cubmasters; Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Den Leaders and Assistants; Assistant Scoutmasters; Assistant Varsity Team Leaders; Associate Venturing Crew Advisors; and Sea Scout Mates).

Nationally, the training requirement will begin in 2011; however, Circle Ten Council has been selected to serve as a pilot site, so the requirements for us begin a year earlier – 2010 for the top leaders and 2011 for all other leaders.

The training requirements for top leaders are as follows:

Cubmaster – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, and Leader Specific
Training.

Scoutmaster – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, Leader Specific
Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

Varsity Team Coach – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, Leader Specific
Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. (Introduction to Outdoor Leader
Skills is only required if the team is engaged in a hiking or camping program.)

Venturing Crew Advisor – Youth Protection*, Fast Start*, This is Scouting*, Leader
Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. (Introduction to Outdoor
Leader Skills is only required if the crew is engaged in outdoor programs.)

Sea Scout Skipper – Youth Protection*, This is Scouting*, Leader Specific Training, and
Sea Scout Leader Specialized Training.

*Available on-line at MyScouting.org

To prepare for the pilot, the Circle Ten Council Training Committee is conducting a training inventory of leaders and updating training records. Many of you already have the required training. For those of you who do not, numerous opportunities will be available for you to meet the requirements before the end of 2010.

Every youth deserves a trained leader, and the required training initiative is a positive step that will improve the overall quality of Scouting in our council. For questions or additional information, please contact your District Training Chair.
