Training Updates 2009 - 2010 Minimize

2009 Changes

New Leader Essentials has been replaced by a new Web-based training course titled "This Is Scouting?"
Like New Leader Essentials, the course will be required for all leaders to be considered fully trained. It is available at the On-line Learner Center at https://myscouting.scouting.org/Pages/Home.aspx

2010 Changes

  • Beginning in 2010, National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) will be open to both Boy Scouts and Venturing members. Venturing members must have completed either the crew officer training or Venturing Leadership Skills Course.
  • Also beginning in 2010, National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) will be open to Venturing members. Venturing members who have not attended NYLT will be required to attend a bridging training course to prepare them for NAYLE. The 2010 NAYLE course will include a hike to the Tooth of Time.
  • Twenty councils, including Circle 10, will pilot required training for top leaders in 2010. Top leaders are Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, Venturing crew Advisors, and Sea Scout Skippers. Plans are to require training for all top leaders in 2011, and all direct-contact leaders in 2012. Direct-contact leaders include all assistant leaders and den leaders.
  • Introduction to Outdoor Skills for Boy Scout leaders is being revised. The new outdoor course to be implemented in late 2010 will be a one-size-fits-all for Webelos leaders, Boy Scout leaders, and Venturing leaders. Once a person completes the training, it is not necessary to repeat it when they move to another program. BALOO will remain as a training aid as it focuses more on safety than on outdoor skills.
